I am Ankit Rana, a Senior Software Engineer at Walmart Global Tech India. I design, build, and operate cloud-native distributed systems that run enterprise e-commerce at scale.
My engineering philosophy is straightforward: build systems that are simple, resilient, and fiercely cost-effective. Shipping features is only one part of the job. Engineering solutions that actively drive down compute and infrastructure cost is the real measure of success.

What I work on
Day to day I work on backend services in Java and
Spring Boot, deployed on Kubernetes and backed by
Azure Cosmos DB. That means designing for partition
tolerance and consistency trade-offs, keeping p99 latency predictable
under load, and cutting infrastructure spend without trading away
reliability.
Alongside that I build agentic systems: Model Context Protocol servers, agent-to-agent workflows, and deterministic orchestration that offloads routine engineering and operations work.
Why I write these logs
Most engineering content explains what a technology does. Very little explains what it costs you at 3 AM. The engineering logs on this site start from a production failure mode (a saturated connection pool, a UUID primary key shredding a B+ tree, a thread pool sized past the core count) and work down to the mechanism to put a number on it.
I write them to sharpen my own understanding. They are published because the version of me from three years ago needed them and could not find them.
A note on dates: I write in batches. A few times a year I block out a research sprint, work through a cluster of related failure modes, and queue the results. The site then publishes twice a week, on Monday and Thursday, so the date on a log is the day it went live here, not the day it was written.
